Ruth Gipps: Seascape

Today marks the birthday of the British composer Ruth Gipps, who lived from 1921 to 1999.  She wrote five symphonies, dozens of concertos, chamber works, and vocal scores.

Gipps said she found it "difficult to understand young people who don't know what they want to be when they grow up."  She published her first music at 8, and by her twenties had also become a professional oboist and pianist. Her triple career peaked in 1945, when in Birmingham, she performed the Glazunov Piano Concerto on the first half of a concert, then, on the second, played the English horn part in the premiere performance of her own First Symphony.

Vaughan Williams was one of her composition teachers, and her music was, like his, firmly based in melody and traditional harmony. Ironically, this counted against her in the years following World War II when music that wasn't atonal and avant-garde was deemed old-fashioned.

Even so, in 1981, Gipps was included in the Queen's Honors List, but Dame Ruth probably derived as much pleasure from her MG as her MBE: an avid sports car enthusiast, her obituary noted that, heavily swathed, Gipps enjoyed driving her roadster though whatever the British climate threw at her.

Dinner

Kaposvár Saturday February 12 Sunny but windy Hi: 8°C/46°F Lo: -2°C/28°F

I stepped out today for a walk, as the weather is moderating, with the highs reaching into the 50's over the next week, and I would suppose that it will continue to warm up as we head into Spring…along the way home, I stopped in at the supermarket to see about my dinner…I found a couple of items discounted, this being there 'sell by' date: a garlic soup that appeared to be 'home-made' here at the deli counter (the container looked to hold a bowl's worth), and a slice of duck liver pâté with a nice 'head' of butter…both came to the equivalent of $3.50…gotta love those sales(!)…I toasted up some crusty bread I had and opened a jar of pimento-stuffed green olives and made myself a very serviceable dinner.

Finom/Delicious!

Did It Really Take A Lifetime To Figure This Out

Remember to be kind to everyone,
Let the people you love know that you love them,
And face difficult times with hugs and laughter.

Conspiracy Theories

"The main thing that I learned about conspiracy theory, is that conspiracy theorists believe in a conspiracy because that is more comforting. The truth of the world is that it is actually chaotic. The truth is that it is not The Illuminati, or The Jewish Banking Conspiracy, or the Gray Alien Theory. The truth is far more frightening - Nobody is in control. The world is rudderless." – Alan Moore main thing that I learned about conspiracy theory, is that conspiracy theorists believe in a conspiracy because that is more comforting. Being In Love

Awakened from a dream, I curl up
and turn. The roses on the dresser
smile and your words bloom.
The red roses for Valentine's Day.

Like in a film
thoughts of you unfold
moment by moment.

I vaguely hear
the sound of your spoon scooping cereal
the water stream in the shower
the buzzing noise of your electric razor
like a singing of cicada.

Your footsteps in and out of the bedroom.
Your lips touching my cheek lightly.
And the sound of the door shutting.

In your light
I fall asleep again under the warm quilt
happily like a child.

Upon waking
on the kitchen counter I find a half
grapefruit carefully cut and sectioned.
Such a loving touch is a milestone
For my newly found happiness.

Gertrude Stein

There ain't no answer
There ain't gonna be any answer
There never has been an answer
That's the answer
